Abstract

Nigeria is renowned for its vast cultural diversity, comprising over 250 ethnic groups, multiple languages, and varied cultural practices. This diversity significantly impacts the development and implementation of citizenship education in the country. This study investigates how cultural diversity influences citizenship education in Nigeria, highlighting both challenges and opportunities. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were collected through interviews with educators and policymakers, as well as document analysis of educational policies and curricula. The findings reveal that cultural diversity enriches citizenship education by promoting multicultural understanding but also poses challenges such as ethnic biases and conflicting cultural values that can hinder national cohesion. The study concludes that an inclusive, culturally sensitive approach to citizenship education can foster national unity and civic responsibility in Nigeria.
